Pyruvate

Patient to be fasting and resting. Specimen must arrive within 2 hours of draw. Require the use of specimen collection tubes (provided by UCI Lab) for blood pyruvate tests. These special tubes contain a pre-measured amount of 8% perchloric acid (4.0 mL for adults and 2.0 mL for pediatrics) to which the blood will be directly added at bedside. Quality specimens and reliable results are dependent upon carefully following the procedures for blood draw and processing. Specimen collection and processing instructions:

Blood Draw:

1.  Have a small bag of ice and special orange screw top tube available prior to drawing the blood.

2.  Draw enough blood in a syringe to add 2.0 mL (1.0 mL pediatrics) to the special tube.

3.  Immediately transfer blood to the special tube:

       a. Adult tubes: add exactly 2.0 mL by filling to the 6.0 mL line.

       b. Pediatric tubes: add exactly 1.0 mL by filling to the 3.0 mL line.

4.  Invert tubes 3 times.

5.  Label the tube with proper patient identification.

6.  Place on ice.

7. Take specimen to the lab immediately.

Note: Send to lab the Pyruvate tube in a slurry of ice immediately.
